This Scary Drug-Resistant Bacteria Was Just Found In British Pork

This Scary Drug-Resistant Bacteria Was Just Found In British Pork   When it comes to pork, food poisoning, rinsing, and imminent expiration dates aren't the only concerns you have to consider. A recent survey detected traces of an increasingly widespread and dangerous bacteria in select British pork products. Researchers at Fera Science and World Animal Protection tested 103 samples of all kinds of pork from various supermarkets in the United Kingdom. According to the World Animal Protection, these samples included organic and RSPCA assured pork, non-assured meats, and Red Tractor assured products. Red Tractor refers to meats that have met set standards for farming and quality, per Red Tractor. Of these 103 samples, 25 were infected with enterococci bacteria. Of those, 23 also contained traces of superbugs: antibiotic-resistant bacteria with potentially life-threatening consequences. Bloomberg reported that the health and science community has grown increasingly concerned about su

13 Unconventional Ways To Use Peanut Butter

Peanuts are a legume high in macronutrients like protein and fat, as well as minerals like zinc, magnesium, and sodium. Although peanuts are mostly known for their role as a delicious spread known as peanut butter, peanuts are also used widely for confections, snack products, soups, and desserts, according to the National Library of Medicine. Peanut butter comes in several varieties including chunky, creamy, and natural (made without hydrogenated oil). Peanut butter is a delicious source of protein (and joy) for many. Although lots of people recognize it for its pivotal role in the great American sandwich, the peanut butter and jelly, it is not often recognized for its versatility in both sweet and savory dishes. Realistically, peanuts can be used as a flavor cornerstone or a building block for other ingredients in a variety of recipes and cuisines. Here are some innovative ways to use peanut butter in your kitchen — that don't include putting it into a sandwich! Make homemade gra

This Summer, Avoid Cooking With These Types Of Beers

This Summer, Avoid Cooking With These Types Of Beers   There's just something about the heat and humidity of the summertime that have us reaching for a frosty beer more often than we tend to in other seasons. On long summer afternoons, as the mercury climbs and we might find ourselves at a backyard cookout, neighborhood pool party, or the beach, an icy-cold brew often feels like the perfect sipper for the occasion. Since many of us tend to keep the fridge stocked with beer throughout the summertime months, this is also a great time of year to experiment with cooking with some of those ales and porters that we already have on hand. Cooking with beer is a great way to add acidity and depth of flavor to many dishes ranging from soup to stew and even to dessert, according to the Food Network — think of classic, heady Irish beef stew featuring a dark, bitter stout, or a surprisingly tasty beer-soaked tiramisu, whose sweetness and creaminess is balanced by a chocolate porter. Because w

Why Food Prices Will Remain High Even As Inflation Slows

Consumers feeling hopeful about potential decreases to food prices in the midst of the current inflation may not want to put all their very expensive eggs in one basket just yet. USA Today explains that while prices on some goods and services are slowly decreasing, sticker shock at the grocery store shows no sign of letting up for multiple reasons. According to U.S. News, prices of certain goods saw a decline in May 2022 as consumers decreased spending on pandemic splurges like furniture, televisions, and sporting goods. While this decrease in spending indicates a slowing economy resulting from the Federal Reserve's recent price hike, it does not consider inflated prices on food and gas. Fluctuating costs on food and gas are often not factored into core inflation numbers; the Fed considers them to be too erratic due to uncontrollable outside influences like the War in Ukraine keeping food prices high. While core inflation in April was slightly lower than that of last year, food pr

How Japan Is Helping Ukraine End The Global Wheat Shortage

How Japan Is Helping Ukraine End The Global Wheat Shortage Tatevosian Yana/Shutterstock BY WENDY LEIGH/JULY 5, 2022 4:43 PM EDT The 2022 worldwide wheat and grain shortage spawned by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February continues to impact nations across the globe. Reduced supplies and soaring prices hit hard, especially in the 36 out of 55 food-crisis countries that depended heavily on wheat imports from Ukraine and the Russian Federation in 2021, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The crisis is multi-pronged, and solutions are slowly evolving. Roman Slaston, a Ukrainian farmer and general director for the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club explained to NPR that the wheat and grain crops are crucial for feeding the Ukrainian people but also for exporting. As one of the top five global grain exporters, per the FAO, Ukraine's inner struggles are consequential. But the tangled web of inter-lapping issues as of July 2022 dig deep. They

Why You Need To Chill Glassware Before Making Cocktails

Chilling glassware is definitely high on the list in this regard, as it impacts the finished product more than just aesthetically (although, yes, frosted glasses look cooler, too). More tangibly, according to The Spruce Eats, chilled glasses replace ice in "up" drinks (think martinis and the like), so the chill provides needed coolness in keeping the cocktail at its ideal temperature while also preserving the quality of the drink, since melting ice wouldn't be diluting it. Makes sense, right? Chilling is also a preservative in the sense that it keeps drinks cooler for longer, even if it's a drink that does include ice cubes. The ice just won't melt as fast. Chilled glassware also has a direct correlation with taste, which Delish sums up succinctly: The best tasting cocktails are often the coldest ones. The Real Reason Ice Cream Trucks May Be Hard To Track Down This Year

The Real Reason Ice Cream Trucks May Be Hard To Track Down This Year Nothing says summer like the sound of the ice cream truck coming down the street. The familiar tune has long had children (and those young at heart) running to meet the truck to get their favorite treat. But inflation is taking a toll on these summer staples, and even keeping them off the roads.  High gas prices coupled with supply chain shortages have forced many ice cream truck operators to stay mostly parked, preferring to show up at pre-booked events or at schools, where they know they'll find willing customers (via KHQA). Matthew Geller, CEO of the National Food Truck Association, told NPR that he's steering his members to catered events, saying, "Every day, I talk to someone that's making a decision about whether to vend or not based on how far it is." And the sound of the ice cream truck isn't just silent on streets in the U.S. As Insider reports, operators in the U.K. are really feel
